First impression

Well, a few words about the name. Baldi is not your character, it’s the professor’s name, and he wants to spoil your character’s life. So, in this game there are two main characters, but you can control only one of them. Then, you need to know some information about the graphics. Some gamers find it ugly, but go on playing despite of this fact. Developers made their game in the spirit of the 90’s, when the first games appeared. Of course, graphics was awful there, and in the modern age, when various immaculate games appear every day, this may be rather strange. But, no matter how this game looks, it has plenty of fans all over the world. And if you are reading this information, it attracted your attention somehow, and you are ready to play it, despite of first a bit clumsy impression.

How to play

You are a usual student, which is always ready to study. But your skills aren’t too perfect, and you will see it right from the start. Your first goal is to find seven notebooks, which are scattered around the school. Every notebook contains several mathematical problems, which you have to solve. As the title of the game states, the knowledge of math here is basic, so you don’t need to be too smart to solve them. Though, some tasks are impossible to complete, because the numbers are wrong or it is impossible to read them, so you will definitely make a mistake. And then your professor Baldi will become really mad, and he will try to beat you with his ruler. This object will help you to orient – you will hear a peculiar sound, which will inform you that professor is close to you. When professor reaches you, you will see the death screen, which will inform you that this stage of a horror game ended for you. This usually means that you have to start the game from the very beginning, and try to solve math problems more carefully.

Useful tips

If you think that the main point in the game is collecting notebooks and solving math problems, then you are wrong. Well, this is true, of course, but the main idea is to escape death from the professor’s hands. He has a perfect hearing, so every opened door will become a threat for you. What can you do in this case? Don’t make any stops. As you are in school, it is full of various people and other characters, which want to interact with you and prevent you from running. Also you will see a scale of endurance, and you need to keep it more or less full. To make it fuller you stop for a while, but don’t make stops too long. The scale also improves, when you pick up a notebook. Your opponent becomes quicker with the next notebook in your collection, so you should keep this fact in mind as well.

There are things, which distract professor’s attention, but you should economize them, because when you collect the last notebook, your professor gets extremely furious. Remember that you should try to give right answers where it is possible, because in the other way you will hardly ever stay alive. There are four doors in the school, which activate the exit, so you should be really quick and inventive. By the way, if you decide to answer absolutely all answers in the wrong way, you will see a secret ending. It’s only your choice which strategy to choose, but this game won’t leave you indifferent anyway.

Inspired by creepy/bad edutainment games from the 90s, (Sonic's Schoolhouse, I.M. Meen, 3D Dinosaur Adventure: Save the Dinosaurs), Baldi's Basics is a meta horror game that's really weird, with no real educational value to be found. Collect all 7 of the notebooks and escape the school, all while avoiding Baldi. Baldi has many friends in the school that will slow down your progress and put you at risk of being caught, so learn how each character works and how you can avoid their attention. Find and use items to your advantage. Oh, and finally, try not to get the quiz answers wrong... Each wrong answer makes Baldi angrier...

Use the WASD keys to move, and the mouse to turn. Left click to open doors and pick up items, right click to use the currently selected item, and scroll wheel to change the currently selected item. Hold down shift to run (Keep an eye on your stamina bar!), and press space bar to quickly look behind you. Escape can be used to pause.

Install instructions

Download the desired .zip file for your platform. It is recommended you download the latest version of the game, as older versions may contain bugs or be missing features from the new,er versions. However, if you enjoy one of an older versions more, feel free to play it! Extract all the files from the .zip file, making sure all the files are in the same folder. The easiest way to do this on Windows is to right click the 'BALDI_X.X.X_Windows.zip' file, select 'Extract All...' and then click the 'Extract' button on the window the pops up. This will put all the files in a new folder of the same name as the .zip file. Activate the game from this new folder, and feel free to move the folder wherever you want, so long as you don't move any files out of the folder.

Linux users, you may have to access the game's permissions and check 'Allow executing file as program' to launch the game.

Android users, follow these steps to install the game:

1. Click the download button next to the file 'BALDI_1.4.1d_Android.apk' on the game's main page.
2. When you click the download button, you will likely see a warning telling you that this kind of file can harm your device, and if you still want to keep it. Tap OK/Yes (Whatever your device says) in order to continue.
3. The file will begin downloading. Once it's finished, one of two things could happen.
   1. You will see the file name pop-up on the bottom of your browser's screen, with an option to open it. Tap open to continue.
   2. You will not be prompted with an option to open. If this happens, go to your device's Files app (May also be called Downloads, or something similar), and navigate to the downloads folder. Find the Baldi's Basics file (Again, it should be called 'BALDI_1.4.1d_Android.apk') and tap it.
4. If a warning telling you your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps through your browser pops up, tap settings to go straight to the settings menu where you can change this option. Turn on the 'Allow from this source' switch for your browser. Then go back to the screen you were on before. Make sure that you turn this option back off once you are finished installing the game to ensure your device is secure.
5. Now you should be on a screen prompting you to install Baldi's Basics Classic. Tap install to start the process.
6. Once the app is finished installing, you should be able to tap 'Done' to leave the screen, or 'Open' to go straight into the game! Enjoy!
7. Again, if you enabled the ability for your browser to install unknown apps during this process, it is highly recommended you go back into settings and disable this option again for your device's security, unless you regularly install apps through your browser.
